A: The problem may be due to a large number of historical bank records. In 5.5 there is a new Period Process called "Clear History" which can help improve performance.
The Clear History Help File reports the following:
Use the Clear Bank History function to remove selected cleared and posted bank transactions. If these items are not cleared, you might notice performance slowdown due to items having created a large table. (You must have security authorization to clear bank reconciliation history.)
Clear History clears the following records:
Bank Transactions.
Reconciliation Posting Journal.
Transfer Posting Journal.
